“You always wanted to be her hero, didn’t you, Arthur?”
The lawyer’s expression changed.
So quickly most people missed it.
I didn’t.
Laura didn’t either.
She looked from Mr. Voss to my father.
Puis à Noah.
Ses yeux s'écarquillèrent.
« Non », murmura-t-elle.
Dad smiled again.
Et soudain, le rebondissement de la pièce se déplaça.
Mon estomac a baissé.
I looked at Mr. Voss.
Then at Noah.
Noah looked confused.
“Claire?” he said.
Mr. Voss closed his eyes.
My mother’s letter burned in my hand.
Noah is not Richard’s biological son.
L'avocat est venu ce matin.
Maman lui faisait confiance.
Dad said, “You always wanted to be her hero.”
Laura took a step back.
“Oh my God,” she breathed.
Noah turned to Mr. Voss.
His voice was almost childlike.
“Is it you?”
Mr. Voss did not answer quickly enough.
C'était une réponse suffisante.
The ballroom dissolved into whispers.
My father began to laugh.
Tranquillement au début.
Puis plus fort.
« C’est là », a-t-il dit. « La noble vérité. Arthur Voss, avocat de la famille, ami fidèle, et le peu de réconfort de ma femme pendant une année solitaire. »
Mr. Voss looked at Noah with a grief so naked it hurt to see.
“I loved your mother,” he said. “But I did not know about you until years later.”
Noah staggered back.
I caught his arm.
Dad clapped once.
Le son a traversé la pièce.
“Beautiful. Truly. A wedding and a family reunion.”
Je me suis retourné contre lui.
« Tu savais ? »
« Bien sûr que je le savais. »
“And you punished Mom for it.”
“She humiliated me.”
“She told you the truth.”
“She brought another man’s son into my house.”
« C’était un bébé. »
Dad leaned close.
His voice dropped.
« Et chaque fois que je le regardais, je la voyais se moquer de moi. »
Noah made a small sound.
Je n'avais jamais détesté personne comme je détestais mon père à ce moment-là.
Pas parce qu'il était cruel.
Because he had been cruel for so long that we had mistaken it for personality.
Mr. Voss stepped forward.
“Richard, enough.”
Dad pointed at him.
“No. You don’t get to speak now. You don’t get to arrive with your folder and your righteous face and pretend you didn’t start this rot.”
Mr. Voss did not flinch.
“I made a mistake,” he said. “Evelyn made a mistake. You made it a weapon.”
Dad’s nostrils flared.
Puis Laura a parlé.
« Tu m’as épousé pour la succession ? »
Everyone turned.
Son mascara avait strié ses joues.
She looked smaller suddenly.
Not innocent.
Never innocent.
But not triumphant anymore.
Dad looked annoyed.
« Laura. »
« Réponds-moi. »
He exhaled.
“This is not the time.”
She gave a broken laugh.
